Kentucky PTA Kids' Day was established in 1985 to set aside one day just for our students. The goal is to send the message to each child that he or she is a special and unique individual who is respected and loved. Kentucky PTA Kids' Day also serves as a day to make the public aware of the educational and personal needs of children and the role they play as our most important natural resource. If you can't celebrate on the "official" day hold a Kids Day event when it fits into your calendar.

Celebrate Kentucky PTA Kids Day on September 23, 2008 then tell us about what you did to make the students at your school feel special.

Ideas for Kentucky PTA Kids' Day from local PTA 2006-2007 winners.

Shirley Mann Elementary

Mann is a new school this year and wanted to make the first Kentucky PTA Kids' Day a very special one. Since the school does not yet have a playground, the PTA volunteers put together "recess goodie bags" for each of the classrooms. These included outside recess toys such as hula hoops, a variety of playground balls, jump ropes, chalk, and inside recess toys such as games, puzzles, and playdough. Each bag was labeled with the teacher's name and with the "Kids Across Kentucky - We are Special" poem attached. All students were given an "I'm a Great Kid" medal to wear around their necks and freshly popped popcorn for a snack. The halls and cafeteria were decorated with banners, posters, streamers and the "Kids Across Kentucky - We are Special" poems. The posters had all of the students' names on them. The students proudly wore their medals and had a great time finding their names on the posters. They are reminded daily of this special even every time they use their goodie bags at recess.

Dunn Elementary

The PTA wanted the children to feel special and to remind them how much they are appreciated and respected. All the students participated in this fun-filled day as well as many parents and grandparents. This is the first time that activities took place throughout the entire day. The Courier-Journal newspaper was there to take pictures and featured the program in the "Neighborhood" section. The halls and cafeteria were decorated with posters saying "You are a star" and You are special". The Cat in the Hat and the Dunn Dolphin greeted the students as they arrived at school. Volunteers served snacks in the morning. During lunchtime Mr. Magic performed magic tricks in the cafeteria. Healthy snacks were served for an afternoon treat. There was an assembly program for the entire school with songs and stories incorporating Kentucky heritage and culture. The children were certainly made to feel special all day long.

Other ideas for Kentucky PTA Kids' Day activities are included in the Program section of the Kentucky PTA Leader's Notebook in the Members Only area.
Reflectionshttp://ww.kypta.org/site/programs/reflections.html2010-03-09T14:47:01Z

Reflections is a cultural arts program that was established by National PTA in 1968. This arts program is open to any student through a local PTA/PTSA in good standing as of October 15, 2009. Students, grades P-12, may submit entries in six categories: literature, musical composition, photography, visual arts, dance choreography, and film production. Students may submit an entry in any (or all) category (categories). Reflections entries are judged at the local level, the district level, then at the state level. Kentucky PTA winning entries are sent to National PTA. Kentucky has had National winners for several years. Contact your local or district PTA/PTSA for deadlines.

Students need more opportunities to create works of art for fun and recognition - the Reflections Program provides an outlet for students to explore creatively what they are learning in the classroom.

The Reflections Program is run by parent volunteers; therefore providing another opportunity to involve parents in their children's education.

Participating in the Reflections Program gives students a chance to experiment in five arts' areas: literature, musical composition, photography, visual arts (including such forms as drawing, painting, printmaking, and collage), and in Kentucky dance in either individual or group categories.

When children express themselves through words, pictures, music, and other art media they grow intellectually - they learn to analyze their thoughts and feelings.

The Reflections Program helps parents recognize, support, and enhance the continuous self-discovery process of their children.

Each year National PTA asks students to submit ideas for a Reflections theme that will be used in future years. Theme ideas are submitted to Kentucky PTA and then forwarded to National PTA. The deadline each year is October 15.

Rock and Read is an inclusive, inter-generational program involving grandparents and senior citizen volunteers who read to young children or listen to older students read.

Rock and Read is simply reading to children in early childhood and primary grades and reading with children in intermediate grades. Rock and Read will help children develop readiness skills necessary for learning to read; enjoy the learning process; and develop self-esteem and emotional maturity through a nuturing relationship.

Volunteers can be recruited though PTAs/PTSAs, faith communities, service organizations, and senior citizen organizations. The volunteers go through a short orientation before beginning the program.

Unity Dayhttp://ww.kypta.org/site/programs/unity-day.html2010-03-09T14:55:02Z

The purpose of Unity Day is to celebrate the differences that make us unique and contribute to what unites us. Unity Day is the Monday of Thanksgiving week and all PTAs/PTSAs are urged to work with their school and community to promote this special day.

Students were given squares of paper and encouraged to write something unique about themselves. The squares were connected to make a quilt which was hung in the front hallway with a banner "Watterson Had Unity Covered". The project showed that whatever makes us different unites us and shows us we are all unique in our own way.

Parent Involvement Schools Of Excellencehttp://ww.kypta.org/site/programs/parent-involvement-schools-of-excellence.html2010-01-14T15:44:03Z

PISE is an opportunity for a PTA/PTSA to conduct a self-assessment of the parent involvement program at their school. A team, including principal, teachers, parents, students (in middle and high levels) and a community representative, complete a self-assessment and submit the application on line. A school can be recognized at one of two levels: Certification of Excellence - for schools that have outstanding parent involvement practices in place and Recognition of Commitment - for schools that are committed to pursuing excellence in parent involvement.

The certification is for a three (3) year period.

Reflections
The 2010-2011 Reflections Theme is:
"Together We Can"
Five Reasons To Run The Reflections Program
View the National PTA Reflections Gallery at www.pta.org
**Please note: The 2009-2010 Reflections Winners will be announced after Student Recognition in May 2010.
2008-2009 Reflections-Theme: "Wow!"
Wow! For 2008-09 Kentucky had 12,524 Reflections entries. Kentucky PTA awarded up to three Awards of Excellence and two Awards of Merit in five divisions and seven art areas. The following students were honored on Saturday, May 9, 2009 at the Wesley Center, First United Methodist Church in Frankfort.
